JC Scholars Explore Character and Leadership at University of Oxford
2024-06-28
In the final week of June, a group of 34 JC Scholars from the inaugural 2023/24 Cohort of the Chairman's Scholarship and Striding On Scholarship had the opportunity to participate in a week-long residential "Oxford Character and Leadership Programme" co-hosted by The Oxford Character Project at the University of Oxford.
Throughout this programme, JC Scholars engaged in a rich learning experience, exploring various aspects of character development and effective leadership. Some of the key highlights include:
Character assessment and one-on-one consultation
Interactive workshops on storytelling, leading with power and growth mindset
"Leadership Challenge" — a group presentation competition where JC Scholars applied their learning and designed innovative strategies to encourage leaders to lead with character
Leadership dinners featuring keynote speeches
Visits to Oxford colleges to learn about their history and traditions
Explorations of library, museum, botanic garden, and an attempt at traditional Oxford punting
This leadership programme has inspired and equipped JC Scholars with valuable insights and experiences to help them further develop their character and leadership potential. They are encouraged to put their learnings into practice and make a positive impact on their communities.
Feedback from JC Scholars
This week has pushed me to step out of my comfort zone, both physically and mentally. I have learned that I have untapped potential that I should continue to refine and discover until I become a better version of myself.
After this learning trip, I have deepened my connection with other JC Scholars. The conversations and self-reflections during the programme have renewed my confidence in a world that embraces diversity and non-judgment.
The programme encouraged me to think about the importance of character for effective leadership. I have realised that my actions, responses, and ability to improve myself as well as relationships with others can be influenced by my own character.
