Chairman's and Striding On Scholarships awardees begin their JC Scholar journey
2024-10-28
The Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarships have awarded the second cohort of the Chairman's and Striding On Scholarships (2024/25 Cohort), comprising 15 Chairman's Scholars and 25 Striding On Scholars. The Induction Programme was successfully completed, including a Welcome Day on 24 September and a two-day Induction Camp on 26 and 27 October.
The Welcome Day provided newly awarded JC Scholars with an occasion to connect and learn about The Hong Kong Jockey Club's operations and charitable initiatives, cultivating a sense of identity within the JC Scholars community. Following the Welcome Day, the JC Scholars participated in an Induction Camp, offering immersive experience focused on personal and leadership development. Through team-building exercises, adventure games, engaging workshops, and group projects, the JC Scholars had the opportunity to reflect on their identities and aspirations.
Feature activities at the Induction Camp included:
Percussion workshop – JC Scholars harnessed the power of music by using their bodies as percussion instruments, fostering teamwork and collaboration
"Human Library" activity - JC Scholars drew inspiration from stories shared by guest speakers, broadening their perspectives beyond their fields of study
Adventure games - JC Scholars collaborated to tackle various challenges, enhancing their teamwork skills
Smartphone videography workshop – JC Scholars learned how to create engaging and impactful video reels using their mobile phones
Group projects - each group shared their vision for an ideal future city while discussing pressing social issues and collaborative solutions
The Hong Kong Jockey Club Chairman's and Striding On Scholarships are entrance scholarships for students pursuing undergraduate degree programmes at eight University Grants Committee-funded institutions and The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. The Chairman's Scholarship aims to recognise students with exceptional achievements and is open to both local and international students, including those from Mainland China and other regions. The Striding On Scholarship acknowledges Hong Kong students who have demonstrated resilience and strength of character in overcoming adversities or challenges in life.
Feedback from JC Scholars
The Human Library was the most inspiring experience for me. Both speakers shared stories that were immensely thought-provoking. I truly enjoyed it!
During the adventure games, I realised that I am more adventurous and courageous than I initially believed. I hope to embrace this new understanding of myself and not be afraid to take risks in the future.
I learned that leadership is not just about individual heroism or solving problems alone with exceptional personal ability. It is also about allowing every group member to shine by recognising and showcasing their unique strengths.
The JC Scholars community is comprised of talented individuals, and serves as a valuable platform for me to explore and find new support. I am committed to staying active and engaged in this community.
I see myself as a new member who needs more exposure, guidance, and opportunities within the JC Scholars community. I am motivated to explore the many facets of being a JC Scholar.
