Experiential Learning Programme – Kindness Walk: Co-creating an Inclusive Society

2024-02-03

Mr Jeff ROTMEYER, Founder & CEO of ImpactHK, shared his insights and experiences in serving people experiencing homelessness with JC Scholars at the first Experiential Learning Programme.

Mr ROTMEYER talked about the common misconceptions about homelessness and emphasised that homelessness should be regarded as a temporary experience in life rather than part of someone's identity.  He stressed that providing shelters is not a real solution to help people experiencing homelessness. Instead, it is important to empathise with the excruciating pain and hopelessness of people experiencing homelessness and fill the emptiness in their hearts.

Following Mr ROTMEYER's talk, JC Scholars went on a city walk to serve food and distribute necessities to the people experiencing homeslessness in Sham Shui Po. JC Scholars gained hands-on experience supporting the homeless and learnt from Mr ROTMEYER and his colleagues about serving this group of people in need.

The Experiential Learning Programme is a new learning opportunity provided for JC Scholars to nurture them to become caring leaders in the future.

Words from participating JC Scholars

  • Mr ROTMEYER is a very inspiring charity worker with a deep understanding of the people in the neighbourhood and a great vision. It was eye-opening to learn from him about human emotions, hostile architecture, etc. Thank you so much for the inspiring tour!

  • I genuinely admire Mr ROTMEYER's awareness of problems in the community, his care for people experiencing homelessness, and the friendships and bonds he has formed with them.

  • During the programme, I learnt more about homeless population by visiting their living places. When I saw people's smiling faces, I was deeply touched.
