Michelle Siu

2017 JC Scholar

She is not able to see, but is gifted with a charming voice. Michelle started learning to play the piano at age four, and to sing when she was ten years old. Having immersed herself in the world of music from a young age, she still has a great passion for it. "Music is like cooking; different seasonings create different tastes," she explains. "I 'cook' with different timbres to produce different pieces. Music is ever-changing and that's why I love it so much. It helps release dopamine and makes people happy. When I was under academic pressure, I would sing to de-stress."

Music broadened Michelle's horizons and changed her life. "I had the opportunity to sing in charity events in various places and visit less-developed areas such as Bangladesh and Henan to teach the local children to sing in lessons. They enjoyed the classes a lot and their happiness touched me. I then learned that music can help others, as well as myself."

Michelle has been involved in volunteer work and has travelled to Bangladesh to visit the eye hospital and families with children suffering from eye diseases.

Michelle has had more opportunities to share her music world with others since being awarded the Scholarship."I really have to thank the Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarships for providing opportunities to students with special educational needs and promoting inclusion – whoever you are, you will be recognised for your ability," she emphasises. "I've had opportunities to participate in all kinds of charity work, exchanging ideas and learning from outstanding individuals from different sectors. I was honoured to perform at the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Hong Kong SAR. Gaining more experience reinforces my goal to be a multifaceted artist."

Looking ahead, Michelle hopes to help the public learn more about the daily lives of the visually impaired and the challenges they face. She hopes to set up a therapeutic platform where people can take a break from daily stresses and relax through music and experience- sharing.
