Welcome Luncheon for The Hong Kong Jockey Club Graduate Scholarship

2024-08-01

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarships have awarded 29 new JC Scholars with Graduate Scholarships this year.  The Hong Kong Jockey Club Graduate Scholarship supports young talents from Hong Kong in pursuing master's or doctoral degrees at top-notch universities worldwide, aiming to nurture caring leaders for a better Hong Kong.

On 1 August, the newly awarded JC Scholars attended a Welcome Luncheon organised by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarships Secretariat, which provided an invaluable opportunity for them to connect with peers and senior alumni.

During the event, JC Scholars learned about the history and mission of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, as well as insights into the support available through the scholarships. Senior JC Scholars, Mr Vincent Cheng (Graduate Scholarship at Oxford, 2021/22 Cohort; Undergraduate Scholarship at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2017/18 Cohort) and Mr Brian Xie (Graduate Scholarship at Harvard University, 2023/24 Cohort), shared their inspiring experiences studying abroad and offered valuable advice to the new cohort.

Vincent, a two-time recipient of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarships, transitioned from an Undergraduate Scholar at The Chinese University of Hong Kong to a Graduate Scholar at the University of Oxford.  Currently a DPhil student in Clinical Neuroscience at Oxford, Vincent expressed, "One of the most valuable aspects of being a JC Scholar has been the opportunity to connect with a diverse and resilient community.  I have been inspired by the public engagement activities organised by some JC Scholars, which have highlighted the impact of education and awareness in making a difference."  He encouraged new JC Scholars to embrace challenges, seize opportunities, and actively engage with the JC Scholars Community which offers connections that can enrich their academic and personal lives.

Brian, a fourth-year MBBS student at The University of Hong Kong and recent Master of Science graduate in Bioethics from Harvard University, reflected on the transformative impact of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarships on his education and career aspirations. He emphasised that, as a JC scholar, he carries the unique responsibility and privilege of representing Hong Kong. "Beyond financial support, the scholarship has opened doors to a network of international scholars and inspiring individuals from Hong Kong. These connections are not merely professional; they often evolve into lifelong friendships," said Brian.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Graduate Scholarship is available at renowned institutions, including Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Peking University, Tsinghua University, the University of Cambridge, and the University of Oxford.  The scholarship is open to permanent residents of Hong Kong pursuing master's or doctoral degrees at these six esteemed universities.
